By Kathleen Gibson: I dreamt last night that we all, everyone, stood in a cave together. Each of us held a candle, precious light that illuminated our world. The cave was beautiful, hung with crystal stalagtites that glistened and reflected our lights.
There was perfect love, perfect joy, reflected in those shimmering walls. The light warmed us and we were content.
::::::::
Then a cold wind came from nowhere and blew the candles out. Every single one. We stood in darkness, no longer in the light. The crystals had no light to glisten, no shimmering reflection of joy, of love. Just darkness. Complete, utter darkness. Without the heat and light from our candles we each grew cold and afraid. Not wanting to spread our secret fear to our loved ones with us in the dark cave, we each grew silent. It was as though speaking our individual fears aloud! could and would instill fear in others.
We tried by our silence to protect those we loved so well from being infected with our fear. We were also each secretly afraid that we were the only one who felt the fear, that somehow we each were less brave, less strong, less couragous than the others, than we should be. So, we suffered fear alone, in darkness and in silence growing colder and still more afraid.
As we waited longer in the darkness, we each realized the sad irony that we all held candles, every one of us. But there was nothing to ignite them. No source to bring the light back to life. Some wandered deeper into the darkness, searching for a source of light. Some cried silently and sank to the ground in despair. Others trembled with icy fear chilling their bodies and spirits.
Then out of the darkness, in each heart came a silent whisper. Each heart heard, not knowing ! that others heard the voice, too. Each heart heard as if it was the only one to receive the message.
"In here, in your heart of hearts, you hold a single match. One chance. Quickly, find your match. Strike it carefully. Protect the little flame as you light your candle. Then swiftly, as swiftly as you can, light the candles of your brother or sister. The more candles that shine, the more flames that burn, the better the chance you have of returning your cave to light. It will take a much mightier wind to blow them all out, now that you know that you must share and protect your flame.
Spread the light and fill your world with all the warmth and light you knew before the cold wind blew. And when you have done this and all of you once again are keepers of the flame, remember what happened here. Remember always how it feels to be so utterly cold and afraid and alone in the darkness. Then you will truly know the gift you hold in your heart and in your hands.
Only by having been in this terrible darkness and this freezing fear can you fully appreciate the light that you hold. Forgive yourself for letting your flame die in the cold wind. Without the loss of your flame, you would never fully be able to appreciate the gift you have inside your heart of hearts. Remember that aching cold and darkness and fear are the gifts that teach the precious beauty of warmth and light and love.
"Quickly, strike your match. Protect the tender first flame, so that it will not be blown out."
Share your light.
It lies waiting in you heart of hearts.
Share your light so that all your loved ones may once again be illuminated.
And never again will you fear the darkness.
Never again will you tremble in the cold.
Never again will fear overcome! the love that lives inside of you.
As light is stronger than darkness, Love is stronger than fear.
