Shipwreck Survivor

Submitted by (Aunt) Mary Golden

The only survivor of a shipwreck was washed up on a small, uninhabited island. He prayed feverishly for God to rescue him, and each day he scanned the horizon for help; but none seemed forthcoming. Exhausted, he eventually managed to build a little hut out of driftwood to protect himself from the elements and to store his few possessions. But then one day, after scavenging for food, he arrived home to find his little hut in flames, the smoke rolling up to the sky. The worst had happened -- everything was lost. He was stunned with grief and anger. "God, how could you do this to me?" he cried. Early the next day, however, he was awakened by the sound of a ship that was approaching the island. It had come to rescue him. "How did you know I was here?" asked the weary man of his rescuers. "We saw your smoke signal," they replied.

Never Too Late To Be All You Can Possibly Be!

Submitted by Christine Henderson

The first day of school our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone we did not know I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. I turned around to find a wrinkled, little old lady beaming up at me with a smile that lit up her entire being. She said, "Hi handsome. My name is Rose. I am eighty-seven years old. Can I give you a hug?" I laughed and enthusiastically responded, "Of course you may!" and she gave me a giant squeeze. "Why are you in college at such a young, innocent age?" Rose replied "I always dreamed of having a college education and now I am getting one!" After class we walked to the student union building and shared a chocolate milkshake. We became instant friends. Every day for the next three months we would leave class together and talk non-stop. I was always mesmerised listening to this 'time machine' as she shared her wisdom and experience with me. Over the course of the year, Rose became a campus icon and easily made friends wherever she went. She loved to dress up and she revelled in the attention bestowed upon her from the other students. She was living it up. At the end of the semester we invited Rose to speak at our football banquet and I will never forget what she taught us. She was introduced and stepped up to the podium. As she began to deliver her prepared speech, she dropped her three by five cards on the floor. Frustrated and a little embarrassed, she leaned into the microphone and simply said, "I am sorry I am so jittery. I gave up beer for Lent and this whiskey is killing me! I'll never get my speech back in order so let me just tell you what I know." As we laughed she cleared her throat and began with "We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. There are only four secrets to staying young, being happy and achieving success: You have to laugh and find humour every day. You have got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die. We have so many people walking around who are dead and don't even know it! There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. If you are nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year and don't do one productive thing, you will turn twenty years old. If I am eighty-seven tears old and stay in bed for a year and never do anything I will turn eighty-eight. Anybody can grow older. That doesn't take any talent or ability. The elderly usually do not have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do. the only people who fear death are those with regrets." She concluded her speech by courageously sing "The Rose" She challenged each of us to study the lyrics and live them out in our daily lives. At the end of the year, Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those years ago. One week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep. Over two thousand college students attended her funeral in tribute to the wonderful woman who taught by example that it is never too late to be all you can possibly be!

Disarming My Inner Terrorists

Submitted by Mary Golden

"If you hate a person, you hate something in him that is part of yourself. What isn't part of ourselves doesn't disturb us." -- Hermann Hesse The most dangerous of all terrorists are those within my own psyche, such as fearfulness, anxiety, self-doubt, shame, guilt, anger, future dread, depression, unforgiveness - the shadowy impulses that allow me to feel like a victim of someone or something else's distress, as I deny the causal influence of my own distress, thus disowning that I am myself the person primarily responsible for my negative experiences. When I choose to nurture my inner terrorists by giving them the power of my feelings and the focus of my attention, I allow their negativity to be my sponsor: "I dread, therefore I am." To the extent that I allow such sponsorship, I attract its external equivalent as did Job: "The thing which I greatly feared has come upon me." Whether dread or joy is the sponsor of my identity is up to me. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I need not pitch my tent there. I can choose to disarm my inner terrorists by ceasing to drain my energy in negative and hurtful behavior toward other persons. As I cease to dissipate my energy outwardly, I reverse its polarity and attract to myself greater prosperity and well being, more enjoyable and fulfilling relationships, and more rewarding vocational satisfaction. Forgiveness is the release of my inner negativities. This is the most effective strategy available to me for the disarmament of my psyche - the equivalent of commanding my inner terrorists to "drop dread already" and having them do so.

Facts About The Heart

Submitted by Mary-Alice Arthur

Here are some fascinating facts from Howard Martin, Founder of HEARTMATH(r), a system for achieving high-performance states using the intelligence of the heart, or "Heart-Intelligence" * The heart starts beating in a fetus before the brain is FORMED (i.e., the heart leads, from the very beginning!) * The source of the heartbeat is within the heart itself. * The heart has a sophisticated nervous system (its OWN brain) with neurons, protons, etc. * The heart also produces hormones, which reduce stress, produce love (oxytocin), and much more. * The heart produces more bio-electric activity than any other organ, including the brain. It radiates this activity out into space, like radio waves. The quality of these waves changes according to our emotional states. * The heart sends out electromagnetic signals, which can be measured on an EEG. Autonomic nervous system balance and heart rhythms are influenced BIG TIME by our perceptions and emotions. * Appreciation/gratitude shows EEG's very different from those of frustration. The former produces less wear and tear on the body AND opens the brain up so we can see the bigger picture!! The hormones, immune system, everything entrains to improve the outcome or performance.
